Mothers Day Dental Health Tips

With Mothers Day just around the corner, I can’t think of a better time to start taking care of yourself as good as you take care of your family.

The team at Oakton Family Dentistry understands that busy moms don’t always have time to take the best care of their teeth. But it shouldn’t be that way. That is why we are here to help!

Here are a few tips to help you.

Follow the “Rules of Two”-

How many times a day do you tell your kids to follow the rules? But have you been following the rules? When taking care of your teeth, the rule is to brush 2x day for 2 minutes. We know you are busy, that is why we recommend a rechargeable electric toothbrush. These toothbrushes usually have the 2-minute timer built into it.

Floss every day-

Flossing does more than keep your smile beautiful and healthy. Flossing removes the bacteria from between your teeth where the toothbrush cannot get to. If bacteria is left between your teeth, you are putting yourself at risk for more serious diseases, some of which can be life threatening. Flossing can also save you money. Not flossing allows cavities to form, and the larger the cavity, the larger the bill to repair it.

Load up on fruits and veggies-

The more sweets you eat, the more you put yourself at risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Eating fruits and veggies are great for your overall health and your teeth. Crisp fruits and raw veggies, like carrots, celery and apples clean plaque from your teeth and freshen breath.

Find some time for fitness-

Getting out for a daily power walk or jog not only helps your overall health, but benefits your teeth and gums as well. Exercise lowers your risk of gum disease because it reduces inflammation in your body, which includes your gums. Gum disease has been links to more serious health issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, so take a few extra steps in order to prevent it.

Visit Oakton Family Dentistry-

Visiting the dentist for regular checkups is important not only to make sure you are on track with your at home routine but to check your head and neck for cancer or abnormalities, check for gum disease, check bite, look for decay, check for damaged fillings, and clean any bacteria off your teeth that may have been missed after brushing and flossing.

Be the amazing mom you are-

Your kids look up to you. We know mothers who make dental health a priority in their own lives set a good example for their kids.
